Whatcha doin’ there, Ace? /smirks/
Living in District 2 again was still a struggle for Jenis. Yes, she was living with Ace and all was well but the faces, the large training center, the scenery…it was all too familiar and reminded her so much of everything she had spent the last few years desperately trying to forget. Ace went to go see Fletcher and so she was alone. Deciding she wanted to clear her head, she got dressed in some tattered jeans and a teeshirt and made her way downstairs. Ace’s mother was busy in the kitchen so she silently snuck out the front door.
As she walked, her mind became flooded with memories — both good and bad. She seemed overwhelmed but thankfully her feet knew the right way. Making her way down an alley and behind a large building, she found a familiar dirt path. As she walked along the path she shoved her hands in her pockets and kept her gaze at the dirt beneath her feet. Finally, she made it to the stone cliff.
It was large and majestic but not a very popular spot for people to lounge about. Though to her surprise, at the edge of the cliff sat a man. Jenis furrowed her eyebrows and walked down towards the edge, keeping her eyes on the man. “Not a very common spot. How’d you find it?” she asked as she pulled a cigarette out from her purse and lit it, taking a puff. As he looked over towards her, she examined him. He didn’t look like much of a threat and he didn’t seem familiar. He had beautiful dark hair and eyes that made her feel more at ease. Jenis’ face softened as she waited for his reply.
Micah had been spending so much time indoors, and at five, what with Arkham and all. He needed to get back to more open skies and the smell of grass and pine, and he knew just the place. He asked Arkham if she wanted to come, but she wasn’t feeling up to it, which he understood. Making sure she was okay before he left, he put on some sneakers and caught the train to two.
He ran silently down the narrow road, past a large building, and through the familiar dirt path, so fast dirt was coming up in clouds at his feet. At last he got to the top. The perfect spot to sit and watch, the clouds, the city, with no noises of carts and trains, or screaming and shouting. Perfect, perfect peace. After his family dissappeared Micah used to come here every day. Where no one would find him, all alone except for the non-silent silence. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
He had been sitting about a minute when a girls voice from behind him surprised him and jolted his eyes open.
He was stunned for a moment but finally answered without turning around.
“I’ve been coming here for years.” He said. “Way back I was running from someone, a shopkeeper I think because I stole some bread, and I wandered down that path. I’ve kept coming back since.”
He turned his head to see who he was talking to.
Jenis raised her eyebrows in shock and wonderment. “Funny, you don’t look familiar. Do you live here?” she asked as she thought to herself how many times she herself had come to this exact spot as a small child late at night and in the early morning after dealing with her parents and their abuse.
Without being invited, she sat down beside him with about a foot of space between them. “I used to come here, too. We must’ve missed each other somewhere along the way.” After a few more puffs she put out her cigarette and looked out into the vast land. Her eyes made their way back to the man beside her. “I’m Jenis,” she said as she offered out her hand. She wondered if he would recognize her from her touring and the posters that were put up all around the District about her new CD release but shrugged off the thought.

Ace had to keep from snickering as she kicked him lightly under the table. He used to play footsie all the time with Fletcher when they were younger. They would snicker and kick each other’s shins as hard as possible before their mothers would realize that the table was shaking or that one of them was either cringing, nearly crying, or in full out tears. Ace kicked her back a little bit rougher, but gentle enough so that his mother wouldn’t see.
Ace continued to munch on his cheesecake, the ice cream melting over the dessert. That was his favorite thing to do. Rather than eat the ice cream solid, he always slurped it up like soup. His mother hated it, but he did it anyways. Ace glanced over at Jenis, who’s eyes were flushed with guilt and worry. Right away almost, he could tell what she was thinking. Quickly, he stuffed the remainder of his cheesecake in his mouth and swallowed it, then slurping down the icecream soup. “Ace. Stop that. Ace. Ace Braddock. ACE STANLEY BRADDOCK!” she started in on him, her voice escalating quickly. At the mention of his middle name, he choked on the ice cream. “Ma! You know i hate my middle name!” he protested, setting down the bowl, a mess of ice cream around his mouth, “We’re just gonna go out on the balcony right quick, okay momma?” She rolled her eyes and nodded, allowing the two love birds to flee the scene for a moment.
Ace took Jenis’ hand and led her upstairs and out the small balcony, right over the city lights. “You know..” he said closing the door and leaning over the balcony to stare out at the city, “I really do love you…but…if you don’t think it’s right…tell me…right now. I could tell at dinner you were having second thoughts…” He turned to her and looked into her eyes. “Just because you made bad choices in the past doesn’t matter to me. And honestly, my mother doesn’t need to know, nor will she have a say in who I date, love, or marry.” he said.
Jenis felt him kick her back under the table and stifled a giggled. She kicked him back, of course, and her smile widened as she watched Mrs. Braddock continue to eat. Ace seemed to stuff what was left in his on plate into his mouth in a rush and sucked down each drop left of his melted icecream. His mother reprimanded him for his manners and she couldn’t help but laugh a little when he complained about his middle name despite the fact that she felt awful for all the lies upon lies.Ace took her hand and rushed her upstairs. Unsure of what he was doing, she furrowed her eyebrows yet she still followed his footsteps. He took her out on this balcony that she never even knew existed in the house. Jenis’ eyes looked in wonderment at the beautiful lights and the beautiful man that stood before her, leaning out to look out into the scenery.
His words were painful but wonderful at the same time. How could she feel so conflicted? Not hearing the last bit of what he said, she began to speak in a rush, “I just feel so bad, Ace. Your mother looked so…proud of her son. And for what? For me? I mean being in love with me is one thing, but do you really want what all comes along with that? All of the nightmares, the mistakes, the gossip? I love you,” she said as she ran the back of her hand down his cheek, “more than anything. And I want this more than anything but I can’t help but wonder if this is all in your best interest,” she finished with a sigh.
She couldn’t stand it anymore. Jenis cupped his face and kissed him deeply, feeling a small breeze from outside blow through her hair. Her lips broke away from his slowly and she rested her forehead against his. “I’m selfish. I’m not going to tell you to stop or to kick me out because I want you…I need you. I just can’t help but feel bad at the same time,” she said with pleading eyes.
His words played back in her head and her eyes widened. “Wait, what?” she asked suddenly, shocked. Marry? Did that mean he was thinking of marrying her?
Ace sighed and listened to her as she spoke. “Jenis…she’s not proud of me because I’m with you. Being a singer makes her think a bit higher of you but…I know my mother. She’s proud because her son is growing up. I’ve always been a child. But now she knows I’m really trying hard to be a man..” he said, running his fingers through his thick, dark brown hair.
He kissed her back as her lips met his tenderly. Ace pulled away and looked down at her. “Jenis..if I didn’t think this was for my best interest, I wouldn’t have stayed. I’ve loved you for a while now. Since I was a boy, okay? Nothing you do will change that. And you’re not selfish. I know this is hard..and honestly, I wish I could provide you with something simpler, more private. But I’m still a kid. Immature. I’m not wise. But I’m trying. Because I love you.” he said, brushing the hair out of her face.
As she asked him what the last part he said was, he shrugged and smiled lightly. “What? Does the word marry scare you?” he asked cheekily.
Jenis sighed, “yeah she thinks a little more highly of me because I’m a singer but what do I sing about? Mindless sex, drugs, all the things that she’s afraid of you being exposed to.” She continued to listen and her eyes grew fonder, softer. He was trying to be a man for her even though it seemed that he wanted so much to stay the little boy she grew up with. “Ace, growing up…it sounds scary but if you do it right and not take it so damn seriously, it’s not bad. I mean I grew up…really fast and I wish I hadn’t have had to but I’ve had some great fun as an adult. I still go to karaoke bars and make a fool of myself,” she chuckled lightly, a small smile creeping up onto her face at the memory, “I still fuck around and cause trouble. Being a man…don’t let the idea be so frightening,” she said with a convincing tone.
He pulled away from the kiss and spoke softly. Jenis listened and gently stroked his cheek as she did so. His words soaked in slowly and she realized. “I guess you really do want this,” she said as she looked up into his eyes. Another soft smile crossed her lips. “I love you, too” she said more confidently. Jenis wrapped her arms around him and rested her head against his chest for a moment, listening to his heartbeat contrast with the sounds of the night.
She couldn’t help but laugh at his answer to her confusion. Though, he proposed what was a serious question. Did marriage scare her? “A little,” she answered honestly. “Doesn’t it scare you? At all?” she asked as she looked back up at his eyes. He looked so perfect, his beautiful eyes reflecting the light of the stars and moon. The moment didn’t seem real but the most extraordinary thing was that it was.
Ace shrugged. “I guess..it’s just…I dunno. Scary to think about? All the responsibilities and everything. Bills, a house, kids, a job..” He shuddered playfully and laughed. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right about that. I just feel like if I grow up, though, everything will change? I mean, look at Fletcher. He went from an awkward virgin to a prude who has sex…well…maybe not much changed other than the ‘having sex’ factor.” he said, laughing harder.
As Jenis laid her head on his chest, he stroked her blonde hair that was no longer in tangles from the rough awakening that morning. Ace smiled lightly as he liked the rise and fall of her chest against his. At her question, he looked down and shrugged. “Hell yeah..it’s pretty terrifying but..it’s gonna happen eventually. I want to spend the rest of my life with someone at some point rather than just sleeping around like I used to.” he said, looking down at her gorgeous blue eyes.
Jenis laughed as he shuddered playfully. “It’s not that hard. I mean, it’s not like you’ll be broke. I’ve got money and I’m sure your mom would lend a helping hand whenever her little Boobear needed it,” she teased, pinching his cheek playfully, smiling. Jenis pecked his other cheek and listened as Ace spoke about Fletcher and laughed at the end. “Oh come on, Fletch has hardly changed. I bet we could still get him to pee himself,” she said, laughing more. “Plus, he seems happy in all his prude ways,” she smirked. “If Fletch can do it, if I can do it…there’s no reason why you can’t,” she said with an encouraging smile. Jenis kissed him softly.
He answered her question and she felt a little more comforted to know that he was scared, too. Ace’s eyes seemed to look right through her. Jenis took a deep breath and her embrace around him tightened slightly. “You’re ready to be a man, Ace. You just have to go in head first, now. And I’ll be here, right beside you. I promise” Jenis smiled at him and cupped his face. “You can do it,” she whispered as she gently pressed her lips against his. Jenis kissed him passionately, running her hands down the back of his wide shoulders. He may not have known it, but by the way he kissed her she could already tell. Ace was already a man, just too frightened to admit it.
Bring it on. I dare you.
